The time it was about Sins of Our Mother

When I was sent the invite for screeners of Sins of Our Mother, I didn’t even watch the trailer, the description was enough for me. I do enjoy a good true crime documentary (or podcast or book or or or) and this one sounded interesting.

Title: Sins of Our Mother
Director: Skye Borgman
Episodes: 3 x 45 minute episodes
Genre: True Crime/Documentary
Platform: Netflix
Release Date: September 14, 2022

Synopsis: Lori Vallow was known to friends and family as a devoted mother of three, a loving wife, and a woman of God. But over the past three years, something went very wrong: Now Lori is in jail, waiting to stand trial for conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her fourth husband, her fifth husband’s wife, and her two youngest children.

For the first time, Lori’s surviving son Colby steps forward to provide exclusive insight into his family’s backstory as well as their present-tense narrative as Lori faces justice. At the heart of this three-part series is a single burning question: how did a seemingly normal woman become the most notorious mother in America?

Interviews with: Vallow’s son, Colby Ryan; her mother, Janis Cox; former sister-in-law, Annie Cushing; former friend, April Raymond; reporter Justin Lum; and Colby’s wife, Kelsee Ryan.

Before we get to my top 5 reasons to watch, let’s check out the trailer.

Top 5 reasons to watch Sins of Our Mother:

  • the story — the trailer alone had us intrigued
  • the pacing — this story is very layered and it unfolds in a captivating way
  • the focus — I loved that the main focus was on Tylee and JJ and the family left behind
  • the ending — while expected, we finished this series with our mouths dropped open

Okay, so I don’t have 5 reasons…Well, I do, but I’m trying to keep it vague on purpose.  We went into this series not knowing anything about Lori Vallow or this story of “cult mom” and I think that’s the best way to do it. This story was sort of bananas and I know I’ll be keeping tabs on information as it becomes available.

Huge thanks to Netflix for the invite to watch this series.  Sins of Our Mother releases September 14th.

On another note, Colby Ryan was arrested and charged with sexual assault on 9/6/22.  I’m including this because Colby’s wife is on the documentary and while the victim’s name has not been released, the article states the rape accusation came from “his estranged wife”.

Have you heard of this news story? Will you be watching the documentary?
