Getting the screeners for Trainwreck: Woodstock 99 (previously named Clusterf**k: Woodstock 99) was thrilling for both Hubs and myself.

We had a very long, very serious conversation about going to the event and ultimately decided against it.  As the show aired and then the news reports started coming out, we were both so glad we decided not to go.  So, of course, getting to see more of the background info on what happened was intriguing.

Title: Trainwreck: Woodstock 99
Director: Jamie Crawford
Episodes: 3 x 45 minute episodes
Genre: Documentary/Investigative
Platform: Netflix
Release Date: August 3, 2022

Synopsis: Woodstock ‘99 was supposed to be a millennium-defining celebration of peace, love and great music. Instead, the festival degenerated into an epic trainwreck of fires, riots and destruction. Utilizing rare insider footage and eyewitness interviews with an impressive list of festival staffers, performers and attendees, this docuseries goes behind the scenes to reveal the egos, greed and music that fueled three days of utter chaos.

Cast: Fatboy Slim, Bush’s Gavin Rossdale, Korn’s Jonathan Davis, Jewel and Woodstock co-creator Michael Lang, among others.

Before we get to my top 5 reasons to watch, let’s check out the trailer.

Top 5 reasons to watch Trainwreck: Woodstock 99

  • the story — we’ve all seen the news reports (of the fires)
  • the music — some of my favorite bands were playing
  • the participants — from the promoters to the production crew to attendees to the musical acts, they did seem to get all sides of the story
  • the shock — I spent almost one entire episode with my mouth likely hanging wide open
  • the actual story — there was so much more to this weekend then what was shared

I did really enjoy this documentary and yet, it felt like there was still a bit more that could have been covered.  There is talk of the sexual assault and rapes, but it felt glossed over. Some of the interviewees acted like they were surprised that women had come forward.  I understand that the story wanted to focus on more of the disaster side of things, but how the SA/SH/R was included seemed like an afterthought.

And TW: there are photos/video shown of women getting groped and harassed and several scenes of interviewees talking about rape (including an incident with unconscious and underage girl)

Huge thanks to Netflix for the invite to watch this. Trainwreck: Woodstock 99 releases August 3, 2022.
