The time it was a mutiny {16}

Hi guys! Welcome to another edition of the mutiny.

What’s the mutiny you ask? Well, I have always said that I wasn’t going to become a review blog and yet, I’ve had this itch in the back of my head… so here we are. I’m waging a mutiny against myself and I’m going to do some mini reviews + feature upcoming reads I’m excited about.

For this specific edition, I’m going to share some of my favorite reads from April, so settle in!

Girls Save the World in This One by Ash Parsons — 4★ — Zombies are my favorite, but throw in zombies at a fan convention and there was no way I was going to skip this story. I love love loved June and her friends. It was delightful to see three ladies completely supportive of each other, regardless of possible bad decisions and choices. There are a lot of long passages of “doing things” (yes, I know this seems like a weird way to phrase it, hence the quotes, but it’s the only way that makes sense to me) and I wanted more dialogue.

Date Me, Bryson Keller by Kevin van Whye — 5★ — Well, this was everything I could have wanted. I loved Kai. He’s sweet, loyal to his friends, and annoyer to his little sister. Bryson is charming, likable, and open minded. Together they’re adorable and their relationship was fun to see grow from casual to friendly to more. There is a bit of conflict and hatefulness, but thankfully it doesn’t last too long. I wanted these two kids together as much as possible and that’s pretty much what I got.

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle — 5★ — Okay, so I’ve already featured this book with an interview with Sarah Hogle, but I just have to share again. I love love loved Naomi and Nicholas. They’re both snarky with bitter shells and it seems like they have absolutely nothing in common. I loved seeing their relationship morph from irritation to toleration to like to love. The progression of their relationship was natural and they made me so happy. I cackled out loud at a few of their pranks and felt crushed when a pointed barb landed particularly well.

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix — 4★ — I am absolutely here for anything vampires. Being set in the south was a bonus. I loved Patricia and this group of ladies. Their dynamic was interesting and I loved how they would eventually rise above being “just housewives and mothers”. Hands down, the men in this book are all jerks and I wish there would have been some sort of retribution for it. It is a bit of a slow burn, but the build up and tension were perfection.

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley — 5★ — I saw this one one instagram and was instantly intrigued. I love love loved Beth and Ian. They’re both stubborn, loyal, and insanely good people. The chemistry was instant and I enjoyed that their situations afforded them access to each other. There’s a bit of a murder mystery wrapped up in this story and I enjoyed how the relationship was leveled with the thread. I was second guessing everything and the reveal was satisfying.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley — a wedding + a murder + an island off the coast of Ireland? This is legit everything I could want.

The Summer Set by Aimee Agresti — a former A-list actress who goes to a summer Shakespeare theatre where her former love is the artistic director? I can’t even wait.

Beach Read by Emily Henry — Two authors with writer’s block who are living next to each other on the beach when a writing challenge is issued? Yes, please.

Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev — a second chance romance inspired by Persuasion that is a companion book to Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors?  A million times yes.
