Synopsis: No strings

After Ava Rodriguez’s now-ex-husband declares he wants to “follow his dreams”—which no longer include her—she’s left questioning everything she thought she wanted. So when a handsome hotelier flirts with her, Ava vows to stop overthinking and embrace the opportunity for an epic one-night-stand complete with a penthouse suite, rooftop pool, and buckets of champagne.

No feelings

Roman Vasquez’s sole focus is the empire he built from the ground up. He lives and dies by his schedule, but the gorgeous stranger grimacing into her cocktail glass inspires him to change his plans for the evening. At first, it’s easy for Roman to agree to Ava’s rules: no strings, no feelings. But one night isn’t enough, and the more they meet, the more he wants.

No falling in love

Roman is the perfect fling, until Ava sees him at her cousin’s engagement party—as the groom’s best man, no less! Suddenly, maintaining her boundaries becomes a lot more complicated as she tries to hide the truth of their relationship from her family. However, Roman isn’t content being her dirty little secret, and he doesn’t just want more, he wants everything. With her future uncertain and her family pressuring her from all sides, Ava will have to decide if love is worth the risk—again.

sounds good, right?

1. Please give the elevator pitch for Along Came Amor.

A divorced middle school teacher strikes up a secret fling with a charming hotelier. He’s the perfect man – in other words, someone with no connection to the rest of her life, or, more importantly, her family. But then she finds out he’s the best man in her cousin’s wedding!

2. While setting up the storyline for Ava, were there any plot points you immediately knew you wanted to include?

The very first scene I wrote was the engagement party. Ava’s the maid of honor, and this is the moment she discovers that Roman, her secret lover, is also in Jasmine and Ashton’s wedding. Roman, of course, thinks this is a great turn of events, and doesn’t understand why it’s such a big deal. But Ava, who carries a lot of trauma from her family’s reaction to her divorce, immediately tries to break things off with him, even though it’s the last thing she wants to do. Luckily, they still have to interact during the lead up to the wedding, so there’s plenty of forced proximity to keep these two together.

3. Why do you love Ava and Roman and why should readers root for them?

I love how relatable Ava is. She’s a perfectionist and a people-pleaser, and even when she’s a tiny bit frustrating, you can understand why. She has a lot to work through, not just from her divorce, but from her childhood. She holds deeply rooted limiting beliefs about love – she believes that she’s difficult to love, that love must be earned, and that it’s conditional upon how much she gives to others. It’s not easy for her to let someone in again. So I love that Roman never gives up on her. He’s steady and patient, and when he does mess up, he responds like an emotionally mature adult, which is unbelievably sexy!

4. Were there any weird things you googled while researching?

I was pregnant while working on this book, so I had to research flavor notes for various rum varieties and drinks. No taste testing for me! So I was literally typing “What does rum taste like?” into the search bar. (Not that I’ve never had rum before, but describing it in writing is different than drinking a cocktail.) I also watched lots of videos of bartender tricks and rum distillery walkthroughs, along with footage of Magic Mike Live.

5. Without spoilers, which scene was your favorite to write?

The bachelorette party is one of my favorite scenes in the whole book. It’s the perfect blend of sexy and silly, with deep emotional introspection. I had a ton of ideas for it, but I had to cut most of them because the scene would’ve been too long otherwise. It was also tough to narrow down the puns to just the BEST ones, but it was fun coming up with them.
