The time it was Reading Rewind {15}

Hi guys! Here we are for another episode of Reading Rewind!

It’s been forever since I’ve done one of these: the last one was in June.  I’ve had the book planned out for about 4 or 5 months and it’s been sitting on my coffee table, just staring at me.  I finally rallied and got to it.

The choice was The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson! This was one of the very first fantasy trilogies that I read {thank you, Michelle} and it set the bar high for me. I was actually a bit terrified to reread this because I was afraid I wouldn’t like it.

1. When did you originally read the book and what did you rate it?

I read it in April of 2013 and rated it 4 stars.

2. Why did you love it?

My review said:

A little slow in the beginning, but it hooked me right away. I really enjoyed the growth Elisa showed through the book.

Eagerly starting the second one.

I’m amused at how short that review is.  I think the reviews I write now are quite short, but compared to that, they’re a novel. :D

3. After the re-read did your rating/feelings about it change? Why or why not?

I rated the re-read 5 stars.

I went into this one not remembering anything except the basic idea, my love for Elisa’s growth, and everything Hector.

I loved Elisa.  She starts out as naive and sheltered and by the end, she’s a formidable queen.  The plot of this story is a slow burn and I appreciated it.  The reveals and double and triple crossing paired with the gentle flow surprisingly moved the story along quickly.  I enjoyed the rhythm and the way things moved. The magic and world building wasn’t too out of control for me. I didn’t feel like I needed to make a chart to keep track of everyone, which is a huge plus.

And yeah, I could have done with 1000000 more pages of Hector {especially when he’s with Elisa}, but I remember bits and pieces of the series and I’m satisfied.

Overall, it was fantastic to come back to this story and see that it stood up to the memory in my head. I’m definitely itching to read the other books in the series.
