The time it was about More Than We Can Tell

I was a huge fan of Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer.  It was one of my top 10 books of 2017 and when I got the invite to be part of the blog tour for More Than We Can Tell, I couldn’t sign up fast enough.

Before we get to the interview with Brigid, let’s check out the book!

Rev Fletcher is battling the demons of his past. But with loving adoptive parents by his side, he’s managed to keep them at bay…until he gets a letter from his abusive father and the trauma of his childhood comes hurtling back.

Emma Blue spends her time perfecting the computer game she built from scratch, rather than facing her parents’ crumbling marriage. She can solve any problem with the right code, but when an online troll’s harassment escalates, she’s truly afraid.

When Rev and Emma meet, they both long to lift the burden of their secrets and bond instantly over their shared turmoil. But when their situations turn dangerous, their trust in each other will be tested in ways they never expected. This must-read story will once again have readers falling for Brigid Kemmerer’s emotional storytelling.

Sounds good, right?

1. Please give the elevator pitch for More Than We Can Tell.

More Than We Can Tell is a book about two teens who are both being harassed by different people in their lives, and while they’re trying to figure out how to handle it, they find each other, and they help each other through it.

2. Which came first: the plot idea or the characters?

The characters, for sure. Rev Fletcher appears in Letters to the Lost, so he was already established in my brain, and I needed to find the perfect girl for him, so I dreamed up Emma.

3. Why do you love Rev and Emma and why should we root for them?

Rev is a white knight in a hoodie. He was terribly abused as a child, but at the age of 7, he was rescued and adopted by a loving couple, and he’s grown into an awesome guy with a heart of gold. In More Than We Can Tell, he starts receiving letters from his abusive father, and he’s not sure how to handle it.

Emma is a fearless gamer girl who wants to take on the world. She’s designed her own computer game, but a troll starts harassing her, and she’s not sure how to deal with it—she just knows she wants to handle it herself.

Rev and Emma meet while they’re both trying to figure out how to deal with these new developments in their lives.

4. What was the weirdest thing you googled while researching?

I don’t know that I had to research anything weird, but the most awesome thing I had to research was Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I took six classes so I could get into Rev’s head, since he’s an expert. It was the most intense physical experience ever. I highly recommend it for anyone. Just be ready to get down on the floor and up close and personal with someone.

5. Without spoilers, what was your favorite scene to write?

By far, the scene between Rev and his adoptive father, after he picks him up from school.

Speed {ish} round:

1. You find out that you’re being published for the first time. Describe the next 5 minutes.

True story: I call my husband and he starts ranting about his day. I listen for five minutes, until he takes a breath and says, “Anyway, how was your day?” I say, “So … I just got an offer on my novel…”

2. What three things would you take to a desert island?

My three little boys.

3. You can only read one book for the rest of your life. What is it?

Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella

4. What book character would you want to date and who would you want to be your BFF?

Date? Elias Veturius from An Ember in the Ashes

BFF? Helene from the same series

5. What is the one thing about publishing you wish someone would have told you?

This is a hard question! I feel like we all learn lessons in our own time. I don’t think I would have changed anything.

6. You wake up and discover you are Bella in Twilight. You know how it plays out. What do you do differently?

I feel like it all worked out for Bella in the end, so I’d either follow the same path, or just get back on the plane and head back to Arizona.
