The time it was about The Spill Zone

I don’t read graphic novels very often, but I’m a sucker for anything zombie-like, so when I got the email from First Second about Spill Zone, I was all over it.

Before we get to my review {gasp!} and exclusive photo from “inside the spill zone” taken by Alex, let’s check out the book!

Title: Spill Zone
By: Scott Westerfeld {author} and Alex Puvilland {illustrator}
Publisher: First Second
Pub Date: May 2, 2017
Pages: 224
Find it: Indiebound | B&N | Amazon | Goodreads

Three years ago an event destroyed the small city of Poughkeepsie, forever changing reality within its borders. Uncanny manifestations and lethal dangers now await anyone who enters the Spill Zone.

The Spill claimed Addison’s parents and scarred her little sister, Lexa, who hasn’t spoken since. Addison provides for her sister by photographing the Zone’s twisted attractions on illicit midnight rides. Art collectors pay top dollar for these bizarre images, but getting close enough for the perfect shot can mean death—or worse.

When an eccentric collector makes a million-dollar offer, Addison breaks her own hard-learned rules of survival and ventures farther than she has ever dared. Within the Spill Zone, Hell awaits—and it seems to be calling Addison’s name.

Sounds good, right?

And now for the photo:

Rating and First Reaction: 5 stars! As I said above, I don’t read many graphic novels {and this is the first time I’ve attempted to properly review one}, but The Spill Zone captivated me right from the start.

MCs: Addison and Lexa are sisters whose parents have died and they live out in a farmhouse on their own.  While Addison goes to the Spill Zone to take photos, Lexa stays at home with her super creepy doll, Vespertine.  There are several secondary characters and I’m not sure what role they play in the story, so I’ll leave them for you to find.

Plot: Fast paced from the beginning and pretty action packed, I was intrigued from the very first frame.  I love that I’m still in the dark about what caused the Spill, why things look and act the way they do, and I’m beyond thrilled at the ending.  Oh and there are so many directions that the second book can go…

Rec it: Absolutely! I can’t wait to get my greedy hands on the next one. Fair warning that there are some f-bombs, if that’s not your thing.
