The time it was about Obsidio

I don’t think it’s a secret how much I adore Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.  So when it came time to sign up for the blog tour, I’m pretty sure I responded in shouty caps and I signed up to review.  Which we all know I don’t do often, so there’s that.

Before we get to my flailing review, let’s check out the book.

Title: Obsidio (The Illuminae Files Book 3)
Author: Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Pub. Date: March 13, 2018
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Pages: 608
Find it: PRH | Indiebound | B&N | Amazon | Goodreads

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha’s past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.

With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heroes will fall, and hearts will be broken.

Sounds good right?

Rating and First Reaction:

5 stars. Well, all of the stars ever. I absolutely loved this book.  I went into this book without a refresher on the other two because I didn’t have the patience and even though I knew I was going to love it, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

MCs:

Asha: Well, she’s Kady’s cousin, so you know she’s going to kick ass.  She’s smart and resourceful and even with being tired and maybe a bit beaten down, she hasn’t given up. She has hope and was super easy to root for.

Rhys: I was instantly intrigued by him.  He’s military trained and crafty and maybe a bit oblivious. His history with Asha is interesting and makes for some delicious tension.

Previous MCs:  Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik are all in this story along with some other familiar…names. This group of characters is seriously one of my favorites and I think that’s all I can say.

Secondary Characters: There is quite a cast of secondary characters. Some of them are friends, some are not, and I’m going to let you find them on your own.

Plot & Pacing:

This book starts off with a bang and doesn’t let go.  There are layers upon layers upon layers and I’m not sure there has ever been a book that was much as a roller coaster as this one was.  There are laughs and heartbreak and swoons and kissing and action and pretty much every emotion imaginable.

I was not prepared for this level of fuckery.

Teaser Quote:

MASON, E: Just once I wish someone would say, “I have good news and ████ing awesome news.”

MASON, E: Like, “hey, we found a big crate full of malt liquor, oh, and by the way, you are the Son Of The One True King” or something.

GRANT, K: Will you settle for good news, ████ing awesome news and some other information you should probably have at your disposal?

MASON, E: You mean “some other information you should probably have at your disposal, Your Majesty”?

Rec It?

Yes, yes, a million times yes. This entire series is amazing, this particular book is a masterpiece, and I’m convinced Amie and Jay are geniuses.  Even if you don’t normally read sci-fi, give this a try.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Amie Kaufman is the New York Times bestselling co-author of the Starbound series. Jay Kristoff is the award-winning author of the Lotus War series. Collectively, they are 12′ 5″ tall and live in Melbourne, Australia, with two long-suffering spouses, two rescue dogs, and a plentiful supply of caffeine.
They met, thanks to international taxation law, and stuck together due to a shared love of blowing things up and breaking hearts. Find out more at Amie and Jay’s websites.
